Robert Saunders

Born in 1950 in Paisley, Scotland, Robert A. Saunders trained at Glasgow School of Art in the early seventies. Between 1975 and 1978 he worked as Art Director of Paisley Museum. Paisleys rich collection of textiles and costume highlighted his interest in fashion and the decorative arts, leading to a specialist period of study with Sotheby, London.

He has travelled extensively in Europe and the Far East, selecting the first major exhibition of Scottish paintings to travel to Japan in 1983. He was invited to visit Japan again in 1990 as part of the UK 90 Cultural Exhibition. Throughout his career Saunders has developed and established a singular definitive hedonistic style. Invariably figurative, depicting beautiful women in elegant surroundings, his paintings evoke a mood and atmosphere of sensuality punctuated with an intimacy, which often verges on the erotic.

His style remains today an example of all that the Scottish genre has come to represent defined colours within a simple palette, a powerful sense of atmosphere and a balanced composition, which all combine to achieve the most striking effect. As Saunders admits, his work does not lay claim to portraiture or weighty symbolism, but are decorative paintings pure and simple.
