It is only in the last ten years that I have seriously started painting. After nearly thirty years in teaching, I started to paint full time in 1999. I have enjoyed the experience of trying to put into practice the work ethic and lessons of teaching art full time. I am interested in the process of painting and am constantly investigating and reading about the materials and the craft of painting. The Red Hat continues to be a major theme within my work. Storytelling and a love of early Italian Art are the roots of the development of my work. I try to create images which are visually compelling and which form a bond with the spectator. Many of the images and the titles used have their source in literature and poetry. Much of the work starts with the title which may be taken from Dante, Sorley Maclean a Scottish poet. This leads to ideas which are developed with life models and a miniature theatre which I built. Manikins and backgrounds are positioned and photographed with different lighting effects.
